After two years of developing this tool and seeing it work for its members, it gives us hope that technology can work better for people who use it, own it, and govern it as a cooperative. Cleaning co-ops provide higher pay than other companies, and because their members are invested in their work, they provide reliable, consistent, and high-quality services, too. In NYC, the market for home cleaning is valued at $273m, but co-ops are doing only $1.5m in business. How might we shift this balance in favor of co-ops?
Starting this Fall, a new accelerator is investing in this movement.
Start.coop is launching a 10-week program to help co-ops scale in their industry. Participants get mentorship, instruction, and $10,000. And in true cooperative spirit, all participants become co-op members, get dividends, and pay forward a small percent of their revenue to future co-ops.
